DAY BUSHWALKS FROM ENDEAVOUR RESORT
Furneaux Lodge its (20 mins return)
Climb the grassy rise behind Endeavour Resort and turn right onto Queen Charlotte Walkway. You have now done the hard part- the rest is all gently downhill! Furneaux is a pleasant 10-minute stroll through the bush, with some lovely glimpses of the inlet. At Furneaux, you can have a drink or a game of pool at the bar, or eat at the restaurant. Itās best to book a table at busy times. Although the track is noted for its glow-worms at night, itās a good idea to take along a torch if you expect to return after dark.
Waterfall Walk. (1.5 hrs return) (Walk track at own risk is not maintained by DOC)
Just before you reach Furneaux Lodge (see above) take the signposted turn to the left. The waterfall itself is quite small but itās an attractive walk through some beautiful bush.
The Pines. (1 hr return)
Follow the Queen Charlotte Walkway past Furneaux (see above) till you reach an area of holiday homes. Itās a lovely stroll through the bush with occasional views of the inlet, and thereās a pleasant picnic spot by the water.
Resolution Bay. (3 hrs one way)
Follow Queen Charlotte Walkway past Furneaux and The Pines (see above). The track gently graded and passes through regenerating native bush, with excellent views of Endeavour Inlet and Resolution Bay. There's a shop at Resolution that sells cold drinks, ice creams etc, and you can have a light lunch on the veranda. You may prefer to arrange for a water taxi to drop you off so you can walk the track one way only.
Ship Cove. (5 hrs one way)
Follow Queen Charlotte Walkway past Resolution Bay (see above). This part of the track has some steeper climbs, but the superb original native bush surroundings make it well worthwhile. At Ship Cove you can swim or look at the memorial to Captain Cook, who was so fond of the bay that he visited five times between 1770 and 1777. There's also a half-hour side- trip to a lovely waterfall in the bush. Unless youāre very keen and fit, you will need to arrange with a water taxi to drop you off to avoid the return trip.
Old antimony mine and view of Port Gore. (1.5 to 2-hrs return)
Take Queen Charlotte Walkway 10 mins west from Endeavour Resort to the junction on Buzzis' farm. Turn right and head up the valley for approx 30 mins. Antimony was used for hardening lead and pewter, and in the 1880s up to 400 people lived at the head of Endeavour Inlet so they could work the mine. Little now remains of the site, but itās a pleasant bush walk. Further steep climb for about 20 mins takes you to the ridge and a view over Port Gore (where the Russian cruiser Mikhail Lermontov sank!).
Punga Cove. (4 hrs one way)
Take Queen Charlotte Walkway 10 mins west from Endeavour Resort to the junction on Buzzis' farm. Turn left and follow the track round the bays to Punga Cove. There are no steep climbs on the track, which gives lovely views of the inlet, but itās a longish walk, and most people prefer to arrange a water taxi to drop them off so you only have a one way walk. At Punga Cove there's a top class restaurant with a good wine list, so you may wish to time your trip to include lunch or dinner there. It's advisable to book a table.
